Society, and Net-Zero Sustainability—the conference served as the foundation for formulating the 2025-2028 National Science and Technology Development Plan, which outlines Taiwan's vision and strategic directions for future S&T development. The National Science and Technology Council also continued its cross-ministerial coordination and cooperation to promote the strategic development of S&T. Several initiatives were implemented in 2024, including the “Great Southern Silicon Valley Plan,” “Net-Zero Science and Technology Program,” “Taiwan Chip-Based Industrial Innovation Program, ” and “Age-Tech Industry Action Plan.” ● Strengthening national science and technology governance system The National Science and Technology Council reformed the evaluation mechanism for research institutes to emphasize assessments of their capacity to undertake governmental S&T tasks. These reforms support the continuous growth of these research institutes. The quality of the execution of S&T policies and the efficiency of the use of S&T resources are expected to improve as a consequence of these reforms. General Science and Technology Performance: Smart Technology To advance fundamental research: A total of 47,267 academic publications were produced in the form of journal articles, conference papers, and books. Major breakthroughs included Taiwan's first domestically developed artificial intelligence (AI) robotic dog for smart inspection, logistics, and service applications, which can help alleviate labor shortages, as well as REPRESS, the world's first miRNA editing technology with promising applications in regenerative medicine. Research activities nationwide were supported through research service platforms established by institutions such as the National Institutes of Applied Research, the National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center, the National Science and Technology Center for Disaster Reduction, and the National Space Organization, along with shared resources and core facilities across the country.
